Easter Ham

April 16, 2019|Foodie

Traditionally it is customary to feast on a fabulous ham at Easter. Ham is my favorite meat. It is just richer in flavor with salt content and the depth of the meat and the texture is better to me. Sunday began our big Easter meal discussion at the Lindsey Jackson household. I was so excited to tell Jordan, "We need a ham! Can you please cook a Mickelberry." He already knew what I wanted and indicated he had been planning for it. The Mickelberry's are just a luxury ham for me because of their rich taste. The quality is just outstanding and has become my standard over the years as Dad cooked and introduced me to various brands and types of hams. Jordan and some of our other locations can special order one for you, otherwise the distribution of these hams is limited.

The other option of ham we have and Jordan's preferred ham is the spiral cut. I always thought this was just the fancy edging cut to make it look pretty but it's not. Jordan informed me it's a pre-sliced ham that is still on the bone and meant for glazing. He vividly described the process in detail, but I'm a visual person, so I sought out further information and found this fun YouTube video...

Seeing the visual made it make sense. However, Jordan informed me he's still not a big ham fan, which just hurt my feelings. He said because the hams are all pre-cooked he just doesn't get the appeal. All I can think is... well, because it's HAM! From a chef's standpoint, I understand his perspective, but the flavor of a ham can be changed, which is interesting, too. And the reason he should love HAM, just as much as me, right?

There are varying ham recipes out there for you to try on your own, ranging from sweet to spicy in flavor. I prefer the hickory smoke or one with a brown sugar glaze. For fancy meals, hot relish or a hot cranberry jelly side is a nice twist for flavoring.

I love that even the novice cook can simply warm the ham in the oven and present it as if they are a culinary wonder. Ham is just a friend.

I love leftover ham warmed in a skillet with breakfast eggs & potatoes. I also love a ham sandwich doused in Miracle Whip on a Hawaiian roll. There are JUST SO MANY OPTIONS! I love the amount of leftovers and I can get pretty excited about some HAM!

Nonetheless, you may pre-order & purchase your ham with us, anytime, not just at Easter. Our other locations have ham as well. Shannon at the 6th St Bodacious in Longview, will slice it for you right there. Her sandwiches on a toasted bun with bbq sauce or mayo & bbq sauce.... just killer y'all. There have been times Jordan didn't have ham at his store and I made him drive to 6th St. and pick this ham up for me.... yeah, it's that good!

Just don't forget to.....

Thank you! Happy Easter!

- Paige
